When Ugly Christmas Trees Attack

I love Christmas time.  I really do.  It’s such a fun time of the year - at least it is to me.  I especially love all the decorations. I remember when I was a kid, I’d go into stores with my parents and just stare in wonder at all the beautifully decorated trees, wreaths and centerpiece arrangements.  I would stand there and dream about being a grown up some day and having the prettiest tree ever.  You know, something like this:

It’s simple and yet it stands out at the same time.  It’s the tree I’ve always dreamt about.  See how all the ornaments match and are evenly placed around the tree.  Oh, and just feast your eyes on the matching tree skirt.  Swoon.

But this year, I ended up with this:

A lopsided clusterf&%k of disgrace.

Clearly noone noticed that the tree was askew while it was still on the lot, but none the less – this is the tree we brought home.   I should have known there was a problem with the tree when it toppled over as Chris tried to slide it into place after putting it into the tree stand.  Mind you, the tree was well secured – or so we thought – in the stand at the time.

When I was a kid, making homemade ornaments just wasn’t something we did.  Each of us (my sister, brother and I) made a salt dough ornament at some point in our early school years and that was it.  Now, my kids come home with multiple ornaments every single year, so my tree is filled – literally – with homemade ornaments, way too many dissimilar ball shaped ornaments and some candy canes.  It burns my eyes every time I look at it.  Thank god it’s coming down Chrismas night.  Yes, you read that right.

Someday, I will have my tree that’s filled with ornaments and garland from Crate & Barrel.  Someday.  But for the next decade (at least), it’s mismatched ornaments, candy canes and blinking lights for me.
